This week, Stansted Airport unveiled plans for a new arrivals terminal which is set to increase its capacity by up to 35 million passengers a year.

Currently processing 24 million passengers a year, the busiest single terminal airport in the UK expects significant growth over the next 10 to 15 years. It aims to make best use of the runway capacity it currently has by expanding to have dedicated arrival and departure buildings.

Stansted’s CEO, Andrew Cowan, said that the airport was attempting to capitalise on the fact that both Heathrow and Gatwick were effectively full, with little capacity to expand in the immediate future.

Although the government has given Heathrow approval to build a third runway, this will not come to fruition until 2025 at the earliest. There is the expectation that it could be delayed until 2030, given the marked opposition to the plans.

Now in talks with American and Middle Eastern long-haul carriers, struggling to obtain slots at Heathrow and Gatwick, Cowan said: “Low-cost travel will dominate growth here. However, we also see that being augmented with full service scheduled carriers.”

Stansted is the main UK hub for Irish carrier, Ryanair, and also serves several other low-cost airlines including easyJet, Thomas Cook, TUI and Germanwings. The introduction of a new terminal could see the airport developing new connections to supply increased demand and passenger traffic.

The £130m planned developments include a new building, styled to emulate the existing terminal design, with an expansive immigration and baggage reclamation area, retail facilities and a forecourt.

The original terminal is also set to undergo sizable remodelling to make greater use of space at check-in, security and in the international departures lounge.

The growth potential of the restructured buildings with a single runway has been outlined in Stansted’s Sustainable Development Plan. It is hoped the airport will eventually be able to accommodate up to 43 million passengers, placing it in a position to take the title of Britain’s second biggest airport.

Currently the fourth biggest in Britain, Stansted processes 5,000 passengers through departures every hour at peak times. It has been ranked the fourth worst performing airport in the UK for delays over the festive period, suggesting expansion is long overdue.

The proposed building will span three levels and cover 34,000mᒾ; it will sit adjacent to the current terminal and the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Overall, the expansion will stay with the existing boundaries of the airport and it is hoped that this will give the planning application the edge. In addition, developers are aiming to complete work in just three years with the new building coming into service by 2022.  

Cowan said: “The planning application and concept design for the new £130m arrivals building marks the latest phase in Stansted’s transformation and enables us to support further growth over the next decade and give our passengers the facilities that they want.

“Since MAG acquired the airport in early 2013, we have turned Stansted into one of the UK’s fastest growing airports.  It has always been our vision to invest in its infrastructure to create the best experience for our growing number of passengers and airline customers and have already invested over £150 million to update our terminal and satellite facilities, created 1,000 more jobs, added over 40 new destinations and increased passenger numbers by nearly seven million.”
